Daily doings

We began private Spanish lessons with the teacher (Nancy, a native Ecuadorian) at our home.  The first day lasted almost 3 hours.  I was totally brain dead when she left.  We decided to only do one hour each time.  She will come 3 times per week and work with one of us each time.  I've learned a lot, now only if I could remember what to say at the right time.

Went to the market, Feria Libre, again for more veggies and fruits.  Only spent 1/2 hour or so this time.  Not quite so overwhelming.

We leave on Friday the 4th of July to visit friends in Punta Carnero, on the coast'
We are staying at their B&B - looks awesome.  Check out their website:

Dinner with friends we met on the internet - Henry and Roxanne.  He is a Respiratory Therapist and she is a 'gringo' hair stylist.  I have an appointment with her on Friday.

On Thursday afternoon we hired our driver for 3 hours to take us to some places of interest and to act as interpreter, if needed.
The highlight of that trip was to the studios of Edwardo Vego.

I love the work of Eduardo Vega.  He is a famous ceramic artist who lives and works in Cuenca.
His shop is right next to his house in Turi, a tourist look off location which overlooks the whole city of Cuenca.  It’s near the top of the hill, on the right hand side going up.  You can park (or get a taxi to drop you off) at the top by the look off point and walk back down the hill (about 2 minutes) and it will be the first house you come to on the left.
He makes a wide range of beautiful and useful pieces. A visit to his shop is kind of like visiting an art gallery and shopping for home decor at the same time.  So even if you don’t end up buying anything (which is not very likely) you’ll be happy you made the trip.  You can even watch the work taking place from a glass viewing window which overlooks the process.

Vegas work is very high quality.  I have a mug/coaster and a decorative wall platter (thanks mom!) that I’m very happy with.  I purchased some ceramic “look-a-like Vega” mugs, in Cuenca’s city center, which haven’t held up as well as his.  It’s worth it to pay a bit more for the real thing.
His work is inspired by the people, animals and landscape of Ecuador.  You’ll see peaces with beautiful hummingbirds, animals of the Galapagos, beach and Andean inspired landscapes, fish, owls and Ecuadorians in their traditional dress.
If you are just here on a visit, something from Vega's shop would make a wonderful souvenir, they wrap it up ready for travel.  Or if you live here, his work will add beauty and a little touch of culture to your home.  It’s also a great place to take visitors.

Stuff......

Sunday, Corpus Christi Celebration at the new Cathedral.  Many Kiosks out and around the Parke Calderon, right across the road from the church in El Centro, selling religious items, sweet treats and other trinkets.  Very busy area with tons of people. The goodies look so tempting.

We did buy a couple of pieces from this display.

There are about 130 stands surrounding the Cathedral - all with goodies to eat!

Went to a brunch at a Gringo restaurant  with friends from Phoenix that are in EC on vacation and in Cuenca for a few days.  We had a wonderful time visiting with them as Ecuador is one of 3 places they are looking at for retirement.  Thank you again, Paul and Nan for a great day of visiting.

                                                      Name of the restaurant

                                                        Courtyard

Monday had us up early for an appointment with our attorney who did help us acquire a savings account.  No other type of account until we have our residency. CD's make 5+% for a min. of $500.
The location of the office and bank were El Centro (center of town) so we walked around
and took some pictures and enjoyed the beautiful day.

                                               Enjoyed coffee and a treat

                                                      Nice coffee shop

                                                  Random shots of downtown

                                                               Lunch (almuerzo)

                                                     Soup (potato?) with popcorn and
                                                 strawberry juice, freshly juiced.

                                                                 Rice, chicken and salad

                                                     Mango in cream sauce
Total cost for lunch?  $3.00 each,
                                                        and it was very good

After lunch we decided to walk around and check out an open market of mostly dry goods like tablecloths, scarves, jackets and scarves.

We did purchase a tablecloth - bargaining is really fun!
                                                  Another good day in Cuenca!

The Mall

We secured our taxi driver to pick us up at 10:00 AM this Saturday morning and take us to the Mall Del Rio.  The only big mall in Cuenca.
I was pleasantly surprised.

The Supermercado is like a Walmart - but neat, clean and always someone to help you.

Inside Mall is like any other in the US. (except MOM)

They even have a Hallmark Store!

The food court is very large and has a giant screen TV so people can sit, eat and watch soccer.  Especially now with the World Cup games.  McDonald's, Burger King,
KFC and Sub Way all available.

I am sure we walked another 2 miles - I'm not complaining, great exercise, just not used to that much walking.  We don't have a car so we walk or take taxi's and sometimes a bus,  Bus fare is $.25 but if you over 65 it's 1/2 that.

Later in the afternoon we walked to one of the 4 rivers of Cuenca, Rio Tomebamba.  We live about 1 block from the river but to get there is 3-4 blocks.

There  is green space on either side of the river where families wash their clothes and spread them to dry on the grass.

Great way to end a fun filled afternoon.

The market experience

I have waited all week to go to the famous market in Cuenca,  I say famous  because Bob has talked about this place for 2 years.  Now I understand why!

It was the most overwhelmed I have ever been.  The market is fresh fruits, veggies in one part and more of a flea market in the other part. It must cover an entire mile or more.

Here are some pictures we took:

                                                                 Raw chickens

                                                         Beautiful flowers

Pineapples

                                                                   Avocados
Bananas

cuts of beef, pork and chicken
More beef

FROZEN -  in Spanish

                                               Needed some fresh squeezed OJ
Even yarn at the flea market

Here's what we bought for $7.00
7 tomatoes, bag of carrots, 4 limes, 3 bell peppers
1/2 lb white corn, 2 potatoes,  1 red onion, fresh ginger,
                                                             1 papaya
and a bouquet of 3 long stemmed roses with baby's breath
                                                                                          and greens.

I am certain we walked 2 miles around the market - we walked and                      walked then just before we  couldn't walk any more we made our purchases.  Next time we won't have to walk the entire area to find what we need - sort of got the lay of the land this time.

Tomorrow, the BIG Mall del Rio.  Hope I can  walk by then.
